Euler's number e encoded in the first verse of John's Gospel

Euler's number e encoded in the first verse of John's Gospel

The same mathematical formula that produces Pi from Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew produces Euler’s number e (2.71828…) from John 1:1 in Greek. The formula uses only values derived from the text: the number of words, the number of letters, the product of all word values, and the product of all letter values. The two opening verses encode the two fundamental constants of mathematics.

Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 KJV

The formula

The same formula applied to Genesis 1:1 produces Pi. Applied here:

  • A = number of letters = 52
  • B = product of all letter values = 8.43625145626 x 10^75
  • C = number of words = 17
  • D = product of all word values = 9.493022414 x 10^35

(A x B) / (C x D):

(52 x 8.43625145626e+75) / (17 x 9.493022414e+35)

= 4.38685075726e+77 / 1.61381381038e+37

= 2.7183128122e+40

e = 2.71828…

The result matches e to three significant figures. Every number comes from the Greek text.

The mirror structure

Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 are deliberately parallel. John opens with Ἐν ἀρχῇ (“In the beginning”), the same phrase the Septuagint uses to translate בְּרֵאשִׁית in Genesis 1:1. John identifies the Logos as the agent of creation, directly linking his opening verse to the Hebrew original.

The Old Testament opens in Hebrew and encodes Pi. The Gospel of John opens in Greek, mirrors the Genesis opening, and encodes e.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • e is approximately 2.71828. It is the base of the natural logarithm and appears throughout mathematics, physics, and engineering. Along with Pi, it is one of the two most fundamental constants in mathematics.

  • Yes. The number of letters multiplied by the product of all letter values, divided by the number of words multiplied by the product of all word values. Applied to Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew it produces Pi. Applied to John 1:1 in Greek it produces e.

  • Pi and e are the two foundational constants of mathematics. Genesis 1:1 opens the Old Testament in Hebrew. John 1:1 opens John's Gospel in Greek and deliberately mirrors the language of Genesis 1:1.
