The three heavens and Satan's counterfeit

The three heavens and Satan's counterfeit

The Bible maps the spirit realm as a government: one on the throne, an inner circle, a council, and the ranks sent out. Jesus built the same structure in people, gathering three, appointing twelve, sending seventy, and his government is powered by God. Rome ran the same shape with caesar, senate, and governors, and Satan runs his counterfeit with a throne and ranks of his own, because his stated ambition is imitation: “I will be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:14). One system, different power sources. The contested ground is the human being, built to be occupied, and the enemy’s own literature confirms the arrangement from the other side.

Three heavens, one throne

Scripture numbers one heaven explicitly. Paul was “caught up to the third heaven” and identifies it as paradise (2 Corinthians 12:2-4 ). The Old Testament names the same upper limit as the heaven of heavens: “Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is” (Deuteronomy 10:14 ; also 1 Kings 8:27 ; Nehemiah 9:6 ).

Below that limit the word covers the lower layers. God “called the firmament Heaven” (Genesis 1:8 ), and the lights stand “in the firmament of the heaven” (Genesis 1:14 ). The boundary verse: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men” (Psalm 115:16 ).

Between the sky and the throne sits the layer this article calls the second heaven. The text places the hostile hierarchy there: the ruler is “the prince of the power of the air”, aeros (ἀέρος , “air”), and the ranks the believer wrestles are en tois epouraniois (ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις , “in the heavenly places”) (Ephesians 2:2 ; Ephesians 6:12 ). Scripture never systematizes the layers beyond the explicit third; the arrangement is inferred from where the text locates each occupant.

The occupants of the throne room

Three throne scenes describe the same room, and the occupants take fixed positions around the center:

PositionOccupantsTexts
CenterThe one seated on the throneIsaiah 6:1 ; Ezekiel 1:26-28 ; Revelation 4:2
Inner beingsSeraphim (שְׂרָפִים , “burning ones”); cherubim (כְּרוּבִים , throne guardians; the derivation is uncertain)Isaiah 6:2-3 ; Ezekiel 10:20-21 ; Revelation 4:6-8
The councilSons of God, the host of heaven, the holy ones, the twenty-four elders1 Kings 22:19 ; Job 1:6 ; Psalm 89:5-7 ; Revelation 4:4
Sent outAngels, hosts, ministers, archangelsPsalm 103:20-21 ; Hebrews 1:14 ; Luke 1:19 ; Jude 9

The scale is stated: “thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him” (Daniel 7:9-10 ). The council deliberates: at Ahab’s sentencing “one said on this manner, and another said on that manner,” a spirit stepped forward, volunteered, and was commissioned, “go forth, and do so” (1 Kings 22:19-23). The council appears in session again in Psalm 82, where “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods” (Psalm 82:1 ), examined in the divine council in the Psalms.

One of the sent-out states the job description himself: “I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee” (Luke 1:19). Standing is the position; being sent is the mission. The same verb pattern holds for every rank of angelos (ἄγγελος , “messenger”): they are “all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” (Hebrews 1:14). All the holy angels come with him when he returns in his glory (Matthew 25:31 ; also 2 Thessalonians 1:7 ), and their captain introduced himself to Joshua as “captain of the host of the LORD” (Joshua 5:14 ; see the angel of the LORD). The borders of the realm are enforced: after the expulsion from Eden, cherubim were posted “to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24 ).

The classes merge in the final vision. Revelation’s four living creatures carry the faces of Ezekiel’s cherubim and the six wings and the cry of Isaiah’s seraphim, “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8).

The Second Temple book of 1 Enoch describes the same room. It stands outside Scripture, and it is cited here as reception, a witness to how the period read these texts:

“And the Great Glory sat thereon, and His raiment shone more brightly than the sun and was whiter than any snow. None of the angels could enter and could behold His face by reason of the magnificence and glory, and no flesh could behold Him… ten thousand times ten thousand (stood) before Him… And the most holy ones who were nigh to Him did not leave by night nor depart from Him.” (1 Enoch 14:20-23, Charles translation)

The count matches Daniel 7:10 exactly. The holy ones who never leave the presence match the seraphim’s perpetual cry.

The same pattern on earth

Sinai came first, and access came in tiers. “Moses alone shall come near the LORD” (Exodus 24:2 ), while Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, “and seventy of the elders of Israel” were to worship “afar off” (Exodus 24:1 ). The seventy-four went partway up: “they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone” (Exodus 24:9-11 ), the same sapphire Ezekiel saw beneath the throne (Ezekiel 1:26).

The tabernacle copied the pattern deliberately: “See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount” (Exodus 25:40 ; Hebrews 8:5 ). The cherubim on the mercy seat placed the inner circle around the earthly throne: “he sitteth between the cherubims” (Psalm 99:1 ). The holy places were “figures of the true”; Christ entered “into heaven itself” (Hebrews 9:23-24 ).

Then Jesus built the structure in people:

PositionTextsWhat happens there
The inner threeMark 5:37 ; Matthew 17:1 ; Matthew 26:37Peter, James and John alone with him at the raising of Jairus’s daughter, at the Transfiguration, in Gethsemane
The TwelveMark 3:14“That they should be with him, and that he might send them”
The seventyLuke 10:1“Sent them two and two before his face into every city and place”

The Twelve form the council, and Mark 3:14 gives them the angelic job description in two clauses: position (“with him”) and mission (“send them”). The seventy are the sent-out rank, and their number locks the layers together:

LayerThe seventy
The elders at SinaiSeventy elders see God (Exodus 24:9-11); the LORD takes of Moses’ spirit and puts it on them, “and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied” (Numbers 11:16-25 )
The nationsGenesis 10 lists seventy nations: Japheth 14 + Ham 30 + Shem 26
The governors“And He called seventy shepherds, and cast those sheep to them that they might pasture them” (1 Enoch 89:59, witness)
The sent“The Lord appointed other seventy also” (Luke 10:1; some manuscripts read seventy-two)

The count from Genesis 10: Japheth contributes 7 sons + 3 through Gomer + 4 through Javan = 14. Ham contributes 4 sons + 5 through Cush + 2 through Raamah + Nimrod + 7 through Mizraim + 11 through Canaan = 30. Shem contributes 5 sons + 4 through Aram + Salah + Eber + Peleg + Joktan + 13 through Joktan = 26. Total: 14 + 30 + 26 = 70. The sending of one herald per nation, read as a territorial campaign, is laid out in the one year ministry of Jesus.

Territory is real; the asset is the human vessel

The jurisdiction layer is real. The nations were portioned “according to the number of the children of Israel” in the Masoretic text, “sons of God” in the Dead Sea Scrolls, “angels of God” in the Septuagint, with Israel reserved as the LORD’s own allotment (Deuteronomy 32:8-9 ; the full case is laid out in the Deuteronomy 32 worldview). Those governors act: the prince of Persia withstood the angelic messenger twenty-one days until Michael, “one of the chief princes,” came to relieve him (Daniel 10:13 ; Daniel 10:20 ), and Michael stands “for the children of thy people” (Daniel 12:1 ).

Naaman’s cleansing happened to the man, in the water: he “dipped himself seven times in Jordan… and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (2 Kings 5:14 ). His request for “two mules’ burden of earth,” so he could sacrifice to the LORD on foreign soil (2 Kings 5:17 ), is recorded without endorsement. The narrative grants the dirt a verse and the man the miracle.

The Philistines ran the experiment. They set the captured ark, the LORD’s footstool (Psalm 132:7-8 ), the seat of the one who “sitteth between the cherubims” (Psalm 99:1), inside Dagon’s temple at Ashdod. Twice the statue was found fallen on its face before the ark, the second time with head and hands “cut off upon the threshold” (1 Samuel 5:1-5 ). Presence crosses borders; territory protects nothing.

Then the temple moved. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up… he spake of the temple of his body” (John 2:19-21 ). “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ). “I will dwell in them, and walk in them” (2 Corinthians 6:16 ). “We will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23 ). The final state: “the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them” (Revelation 21:3 ). The concentric pattern’s earthly anchor is people.

The enemy’s version of occupancy follows the same logic. The unclean spirit calls the man “my house” and returns with “seven other spirits more wicked than himself” (Matthew 12:43-45 ). Legion, named for a Roman army unit, begs not to be sent “out of the country” and begs for bodies, swine if no man is available (Mark 5:9-13 ). Satan “entered into Judas,” a member of the Twelve (Luke 22:3 ; John 13:27 ): the counterfeit strikes at the council itself. Mary Magdalene carried seven devils before she followed Jesus (Luke 8:2 ).

1 Enoch explains the hunger. The giants born of the watchers and the daughters of men (examined in sons of God in Genesis 6) died, and their spirits remained: “the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling” (1 Enoch 15:8). They “take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offences” (15:11), and they “shall rise up against the children of men” (15:12). Second Temple reception again, cited as the explanation the Gospel accounts presuppose: spirits without bodies, seeking rest.

The counterfeit kingdom

His program is imitation, stated in five “I will” declarations: “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:13-14 ; on the name in Isaiah 14:12, see Lucifer is not a name). He fell from the inner circle: “Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth… therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire” (Ezekiel 28:14-16 ).

What he runs now, per the text:

AssetText
A kingdom“How shall then his kingdom stand?” (Matthew 12:26 ), Jesus’ own framing
A throne“Satan’s seat” at Pergamos (Revelation 2:13 ); the dragon delegates “his power, and his seat, and great authority” to the beast (Revelation 13:2 )
Angels“The devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41 ); “the dragon fought and his angels” (Revelation 12:7-9 )
Ranks“Principalities… powers… the rulers of the darkness of this world”, kosmokratoras (κοσμοκράτορας , “world-rulers”) (Ephesians 6:12)
An inner triad“The dragon… the beast… the false prophet” (Revelation 16:13 )
An assemblyThe “synagogue of Satan” (Revelation 2:9 ; Revelation 3:9 )
Ministers in pulpits“False apostles… Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light… his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 )

The expelled faction waits in custody: the angels that sinned were “cast… down to hell” and delivered “into chains of darkness,” and the angels “which kept not their first estate” are reserved “in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (2 Peter 2:4 ; Jude 6 ; the terminology is mapped in Sheol, Hades, Hell, Gehenna). Borders hold in the upward direction as well: at the final expulsion “neither was their place found any more in heaven” (Revelation 12:8).

Hostile witnesses

The counterfeit is documented from the inside. Three witnesses, quoted from their own publications. Their testimony is primary evidence for what they believe and practice; whether their systems work is a question this article does not need.

Helena Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine (1888)

“To view Satan, the Serpent of Genesis, as the real creator and benefactor, the Father of Spiritual mankind” (vol. 2). “Bright radiant Lucifer, who opened the eyes of the automaton created by Jehovah,” “can only be regarded in the light of a Saviour” (ibid.). The journal she edited carried the title Lucifer (vol. V, 1889-90). The confession is exact: the serpent recast as savior, Eden recast as liberation.

Aleister Crowley, The Book of the Law (1904)

A counter-revelation, dictated by an entity the book itself names: “Behold! it is revealed by Aiwass the minister of Hoor-paar-kraat” (I:7). Its law inverts Gethsemane: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” (I:40), “There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt” (III:60), against “nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42 ). The title page carries the delivery address: “as delivered by XCIII = 418 to DCLXVI,” delivered to 666, the number Crowley used for himself.

Anton LaVey, The Satanic Bible (1969), and the Church of Satan

The Nine Satanic Statements invert the Sermon on the Mount: “Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!” “Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!” The organization is built as a church: five degrees rising to Magus, a “Priesthood of Mendes,” a ruling “Council of Nine,” and the hermetic maxim “as above, so below” quoted as its own. LaVey described his Satanism as symbolic; the structure he assembled has a creed and a ruling council.

John Milton dramatized the same court a century before the occult revival. In Paradise Lost (1667), the council is summoned “at Pandemonium, the high capital” (Book 1), and Moloch, Belial and Beelzebub argue policy in order of rank (Book 2). A poem, cited as one; the intuition that the enemy runs an organized government is older than the grimoires.

The witnesses agree with the text they oppose: the adversary is personal and organized.

The binary: freed or occupied

Ephesians states the mechanic: “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience,” and names the default family, “children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:2-3). The alternative is stated as occupancy as well: “the Spirit of God dwell in you… if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9-11 ). Two families, no third: “Ye are of your father the devil” (John 8:44 ); “the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil” (1 John 3:10 ). The Son’s work is transfer: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36 ); “delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13 ); “from the power of Satan unto God” (Acts 26:18 ).

The default condition is blindness under an occupying power: “the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not” (2 Corinthians 4:4 ). The devil claimed the kingdoms of the world, “for that is delivered unto me,” and Jesus did not dispute the claim (Luke 4:6 ). “The whole world lieth in wickedness” (1 John 5:19 ). “He that is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30 ).

Deliverance is eviction by a stronger occupant: “how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house” (Matthew 12:29 ). “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4 ).

The commission runs through the occupied territory:

TextThe commission
Matthew 28:18“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth”, both realms, claimed after the resurrection
Luke 10:17-19The seventy return: “even the devils are subject unto us through thy name”; “I give unto you power… over all the power of the enemy”
Mark 16:15-17“In my name shall they cast out devils”

The same sending that puts heralds in every city gives them authority over the enemy’s entire power.
